Désormais,pour que nous puissions faire paraître vos annonces de vente d'animaux,vous êtes obligés de respecter la loi 99-5 du 6 janvier 1999. Cette loi n° 99-5 énumère dans son article 16 les nouvelles mentions devant figurer dans une annonce d'offre de cession de chiens et énonce,dans son article 12,les sanctions applicables en cas de contravention aux dispositions de l'article précité.

La sélection naturelle et l'adaptation au milieu ont été, à l'origine, des facteurs déterminants, mais très rapidement ce sont, sans nul doute, les mutations (modifications intervenant au niveau des chromosomes, pouvant se traduire par un aspect de la descendance différent de celui des parents de même race) et la sélection dirigée qui ont joué le rôle essentiel dans l'apparition des races actuelles. Ainsi, le teckel est né d'une mutation brutale, apparue sur une portée de brunos du Jura. Ce phénomène de bassétisme (pattes très courtes), courant en biologie et héréditaire, a été ensuite exploité par la sélection, la forme nouvelle obtenue ayant amusé et intéressé l'homme. Le maintien des caractères d'une race nouvelle étant possible techniquement, par le jeu de la consanguinité (reproduction d'un animal avec un parent proche), toutes les anomalies physiques apparues par hasard et ayant retenu l'attention des éleveurs ont été fixées puis exploitées, ces déviations devenant critères de beauté ou d'élégance.
Chaque race est définie par un " standard ", énumérant un certain nombre de caractères morphologiques sur la base desquels un chien est accepté comme faisant partie d'une race donnée ou, au contraire, refusé. Il convient de connaître, pour apprécier la conformité de tel ou tel sujet au standard, une terminologie spéciale que l'on appelle " l'extérieur " du chien. Sont ainsi considérés : la taille ; le poids ; la texture, la longueur du poil ; la couleur de la robe et, le cas échéant, la répartition des taches ; la forme et le port des oreilles ; l'attache, la longueur et le port de la queue ; la couleur des yeux ; le nombre de dents et la couleur du palais, etc.
Ces critères morphologiques ont permis de définir plus de 200 races canines et de les classer en plusieurs catégories.
Chiens de garde et d'utilité :bergers (allemand, de Beauce, d'Écosse ; groenendael...) ;bouviers (des Flandres, des Ardennes, de Suisse...) ;dogues (allemand, de Bordeaux ; boxer...) ;chiens de montagne et de traîneaux (saint-bernard, samoyède...).
Lévriers :greyhound, whippet, sloughi...
Chiens de chasse :chiens de chasse à courre aux cerfs (bleu de Gascogne, poitevin) ;chiens de chasse à courre aux renards (basset hound, saint-hubert, griffon vendéen...) ;chiens d'arrêt (braque, pointer, setter, épagneul, cocker...) ; ils ont un odorat très développé et s'arrêtent quand ils sentent le gibier ;
chiens de terrier (airedale-terrier, fox-terrier, irish-terrier...), pouvant s'infiltrer dans les terriers des animaux chassés.
